Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has no future at Spurs

With Ange Postecoglou‘s arrival at Spurs, a handful of players found themselves falling down the pecking order at the club.

One such player was Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who went from being one of the first names on the team sheet under previous managers, to being a fringe player, feeding off substitute appearances for the most part.

With the likes of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pape Matar Sarr above him in the Tottenham ranks, Hojbjerg moved on to Marseille in the summer on a loan deal for the year. His agreement included a buy clause, though, and it seems the French club want to trigger that option.

Marseille will buy Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham

Speaking to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Marseille advisor Mehdi Benatia explained the club are already prepared to make Hojbjerg’s stay in France permanent. This is an interesting development, as some reports originally claimed the loan deal featured an obligation to buy for £17m, rather than an option (Sky Sports).

“Pierre has signed a loan agreement with an option to buy, so the move will soon become permanent,” Benatia said.

Discussing the midfielder’s impact, Benatia added: “You can just look at the statistics. Pierre is one of the best, or the best, player in Ligue 1 when it comes to ball possession and successful passes. It says everything about his role on the pitch and as a leader in midfield.

“He’s a natural leader and a good example for all his teammates, especially the young players. We have a very young team, and Pierre is essential for them so they can learn what it means to play football at such a high level. He is really important to Roberto De Zerbi.

“He makes the team stronger, and he’s already indispensable. He represents exactly what a Marseille player should be according to our president: exemplary, professional, dedicated and hardworking.”

Marseille move is a perfect fit for Hojbjerg

Hojbjerg was not quite the right player for Ange Postecoglou’s style of play, as he was never the most dynamic or adventurous midfielder. He’s a great fit for the French league, which is a little slower and more patient, giving him time on the ball to make the right decisions.
