Romero’s future

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Romero’s future since the summer window and the reports linking him away from Tottenham show no signs of dying down at the moment.

Reports from Argentina suggested last week that the centre-back has a £54million release clause in his contract but this claim was subsequently shut down by Fabrizio Romano, who insisted that no such clause exists.

King scoffs at rumours

King has now suggested that the Argentine press is merely trying to stir things up, dismissing the rumours as ‘rubbish’.

He further suggested that no club top club would be interested in the Tottenham vice-captain if he does not improve on his recent performances.

When asked about the transfer rumour, the former Spurs scout told Tottenham News: “I’m not surprised with anything that goes in the press these days. Agents are feeding newspaper lines which are never being checked out properly. That is a problem, because they then become rumours, stories to fill papers.

“It is rubbish, just the Argentinian press trying to stir things up, thinking nobody will read the stories back in England. However, someone will always pick it up.

“It seems as though all of Spurs’ defenders have been linked with moves away at one point or another. They need to think of the club they’re playing for, Tottenham are a top club with a magnificent stadium.

“For now, Romero needs to knuckle down. Looking at his displays recently, nobody would be interested in buying him anyway.”

Romero uncharacteristic errors

Romero has fallen well short of the high standards he has set for himself, being guilty of several lapses in concentration at the back, which have cost his side goals.

Given Tottenham’s high-risk approach, they simply cannot afford unforced errors at the back but Ange Postecoglou will back the 26-year-old to come through this difficult spell and get back to the dominant defender we know.
