Tottenham’s Dominic Solanke explains why now is perfect time for his England recall

0 0

Speaking to the press ahead of the upcoming international fixtures, Tottenham Hotspur star Dominic Solanke discussed his recall to the England setup.

Solanke is back with the Three Lions

Dominic Solanke‘s one and only England cap came way back in November 2017, when he made a substitute appearance in a friendly against Brazil. He got 15 minutes in that game, which ended 0-0.

Since then, the striker has left Liverpool for Bournemouth, had a prolific season in the Championship, helped the Cherries stay in the Premier League, and, after another impressive campaign in 2023/24, made the big-money switch to Tottenham in the summer.

After an injury disrupted the start of his Spurs career, the frontman has returned to fitness and found his form, bagging three goals in three games for his new club.

And, with that, has secured his place in Lee Carsley’s England squad for the doubleheader against Greece and Finland this week as part of the Nations League group games.

The time is right for Solanke

Solanke is obviously delighted to be back in the fold with the national team and, speaking to the press (via Hayters TV), the Tottenham man discussed his feelings now that he’s back, his hopes for the upcoming games, and how he has changed since his last call-up.

On what this recall means, he said: “It means so much. I’ve worked very hard to get back to this moment. Obviously, I made my debut a long time ago, and it’s been quite a journey to get back here… it’s a great feeling.

“Obviously the dream is to represent the country, hopefully, I can get some minutes. I’m just happy to be here again and want to help the team.”

When asked if he ever believed his chance with England had passed him by, Solanke replied: “I didn’t think it wouldn’t come back round, no… I just had to keep doing what I’m doing; keep playing well, scoring goals, and I believed I could get back here. It was something I was working towards. Hopefully I can stay here.

“I was young [last time for England]. I’ve done a lot of learning and developing, I’m more mature. Naturally, I’m in a better position now. I feel good.”

Call-up should have come sooner

It is of course brilliant to see Solanke get the call-up to the England squad for these games, and he deserves it. But, let’s be honest, it’s madness that his goalscoring form for Bournemouth last season didn’t get him in the squad sooner. Thankfully, all it took was a move to a Big Six club to get him noticed again by England.
