Spurs exposed Man Utd

The clash at Old Trafford clearly showed the chasm between Spurs and Man Utd, with the away side looking well-drilled and having a clear identity while the home side looked completely lost.

Tottenham’s 3-0 win served as confirmation that the Ange Postecoglou project is heading in the right direction, with the Lilywhites showing just how devastating they can be when things click for them.

The Spurs players will take confidence from the result and will look to build on the momentum after a slow start to the season.

Sherwood points to United’s transfer mistake

Sherwood admitted that, unlike their opponents, the North London side’s game plan is clear for all to see both in and out of possession.

Curiously, the pundit also suggested that Erik Ten Hag should have signed Micky van de Ven over his international teammate Matthijs de Ligt.

The former Tottenham interim boss told Premier League Productions (29/09/24 at 5:25 pm): “Tottenham have a clear identity out of possession and in possession. Micky van de Ven picks the ball up, it’s a wide open space and look at the pace and power of this kid. Then the ability to find Brennan Johnson with a cross at the far post.

“Manchester United fans must be looking at it and say ‘Look, our manager has signed a lot of Dutch players. There is probably one who is very, very good and playing for Tottenham’.

“He might have jumped at the chance to go and play for Man United, but never got the opportunity because he took de Ligt over the top of him This boy is a thoroughbred. I know Michael (Owen) trains racehorses, he would like to have this one in the stable. Look at the pace, power and the ability of that boy.”

An outstanding signing

Many teams across the Premier League will be ruing the fact that they did not take a punt on Van de Ven on the back of his breakthrough season at Wolfsburg and that they allowed Spurs to swoop for him uncontested.

The centre-back appears well on his way to becoming one of the best in the world in his position.

One would imagine that Daniel Levy and Spurs will not be entertaining any approaches for the 23-year-old, given that he is contracted to the club until 2029 (Transfermarkt).
