Best performance of the season

While a lot of the discussion following Sunday’s game has been about how poor Man Utd were, Tottenham delivered what was arguably the best performance by any Premier League side so far this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s men showed just how dominant and devastating they can be when things click for them.

The Tottenham head coach will be hoping that his side has turned a corner and that the performance at Old Trafford is a sign of things to come.

Agbonlahor’s claim about Tottenham man

Unsurprisingly, Micky Van de Ven was one of three Spurs players to make it into Agbonlahor’s Team of the Week after the Dutchman helped his side keep a clean sheet and produced the assist of the season so far.

The former Aston Villa striker admitted that he would have hated coming up against the Spurs defender, opining that the 23-year-old is one of the best centre-backs in the world.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT about Van de Ven: “I called him one of the best centre-halves in the Premier League and I got slaughtered for it, but I stand by that.

“He’s an outstanding defender. The assist for the first goal was something you don’t really see from centre-halves – he’s got that and can do it more often.

“His defending as well – quick, aggressive, strong. He’s a player I’d have hated to play against and I’m sure strikers and wingers don’t wanna play against him. Top, top defender.”

Dynamic midfield duo

Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison were the two other Spurs players to make it into Agbonlahor’s Team of the Week.

The pundit was particularly impressed with the Swede, suggesting that he looks a lot more comfortable in the middle of the park than he did out wide.

He said about Kulusevski: “I thought he was outstanding and just love the way he’s turned into a player who is showing consistency.

“Last season he was poor but this season, he’s becoming a lot better. He was positive, looked quicker than normal and was making the right passes.

“He took his goal well – people think it’s a tap-in but it’s clever. It’s looping over the keeper. I just love the way Kulusevski wants to get on the ball and maybe not playing on the wing suits him.

“Coming in and playing in that number ten position suits him better than being stuck out on the right. Kulusevski, with his goal and all-round performance, was top!”

Agbonlahor also stated that it is inevitable that Maddison would get back into the England set-up if he continues playing at the level that he currently is.

He added about the 27-year-old: “I thought he was outstanding again and he has been all season. He got a goal and an assist last week and should have got at least one assist this week. What I love about Maddison is that this is the Maddison Spurs want to see.

“Receiving the ball on the half turn, little touches and one-twos, always wants to play forward and make something happen. That’s what we want to see from James Maddison and that’s what we’re starting to see. If he continues like this, he’ll undoubtedly be back in the England squad. An amazing talent.”
