Maddison’s statement performances

Some Spurs fans would be lying if they said that they did not have some concerns surrounding Maddison coming into the new season, given the way his performances dropped off in the latter part of last campaign.

In fact, on the back of pre-season, there were even calls on social media for Lucas Bergvall to start ahead of the England international.

However, the 27-year-old has well and truly silenced his critics at the start of the new season, having arguably been Tottenham’s best player so far.

The attacking midfielder has shown that when he is fit and firing, there are hardly any better than him in the Premier League when it comes to creating chances and opening up defences.

Maddison’s frustration

However, Hutchison believes that one thing that would leave Maddison frustrated is the fact that Postecoglou continues taking him off in the latter part of matches.

The pundit suggested that the former Leicester man would be irritated at the fact that he is having to come off even when he is playing well.

Hutchison told Premier League Productions: “What I’ve noticed as well, which must be really frustrating for him, in the last 15 minutes of games that Tottenham play he gets taken off. I can never understand when you’re trailing in a game you take one of your most creative players off.

“He’s the one who has the magic, he’s one of those players where you need to feed him otherwise he can be anonymous in a game. He won’t go box to box and cover the ground.”

Bergvall getting opportunities to shine

Part of the reason Postecoglou keeps taking Maddison off is to hand chances to Bergvall, who has impressed in every outing he has had so far.

The Aussie coach would want to ensure the 18-year-old gets consistent minutes so that his development is not halted.

Postecoglou would also be mindful about the fact that Maddison is a little injury prone and he would thus want to keep the midfielder fresh as Spurs enter a key part of the season.
