Tottenham star celebrates wearing the captain’s armband for first time ever

0 3

Tottenham got their Europa League campaign off to a great start last night with a win over Azerbaijan outfit Qarabag, and it was an eventful game, to say the least. Guglielmo Vicario put in a top performance, and has one big milestone to take away from the game, too.

Captain’s armband for Vicario

Ange Postecoglou put out a strong lineup for the visit of Qarabag at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday, and it paid off as Spurs romped to a convincing 3-0 win to get their Europa League journey off to a perfect start.

That’s not to say that Qarabag didn’t have their fair share of chances, though, and it was down to Guglielmo Vicario to keep the away side at bay and protect an important clean sheet for his team.

In our match ratings from the game, we praised the goalkeeper for his outstanding saves and decision-making, giving him a score of 9 out of 10.

While we’re sure Vicario will be happy with that, he will be even happier to have been given the captain’s armband upon Heung-min Son’s departure from the pitch with 20 minutes to go.

It is the first time the Italian has skippered the side, and he took to Instagram after the game to celebrate this momentous occasion and thanks everyone for supporting him.

His post came with the caption: “A day that I will not forget. The first one as captain, leading this great club, at home, in a European cup and more importantly getting the three points. Proud.

“This one is for the fans that are always by our side no matter what.”

Welcome to the leadership group

Just last week, Postecoglou had mentioned that three of his four captains were involved in James Maddison’s goal against Brentford. That came as something of a surprise, as it was the first reference to a fourth captain at the club.

We looked at the evidence at the time and suggested Vicario was very likely the mystery fourth captain, given he was added to Postecoglou’s leadership group in the summer. Now, it is clear he is next in line for the armband behind Son, Cristian Romero, and Maddison.

Vicario silences the critics

I will be the first to hold my hands up and say I was getting worried about Vicario of late. He looked incredibly shaky against Brentford and his vulnerabilities have definitely been more evident over the last few months.

But, when he’s at his best, he is an incredible goalkeeper. His shot-stopping ability is unreal, and you cannot fault his passion for the club, either.
