Lo Celso left Spurs for £8.4m this summer

While the writing seemed to be on the wall for Lo Celso right from the start of the summer, it took until the final hours of the transfer deadline day for the midfielder to eventually seal an exit from Spurs.

After months of speculation, the 28-year-old did make a long-awaited return to Real Betis, five years on from his move to Spurs from the La Liga side.

According to reports, the Lilywhites got a fee of around £8.4m for the Argentina international while also securing a £25m option to sign Betis midfielder Johnny Cardoso as a part of the deal (Football.London).

It has been revealed by various Spanish outlets that Lo Celso himself played a key part in forcing through the transfer, having had his heart set on a return to the Benito Villamarin Stadium (ABC Sevilla via Sport Witness).

Lo Celso rejected several offers to join Real Betis

The former Tottenham man has now opened up on his decision, revealing that he rejected many offers in favour of a move to Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

He told Betis’ YouTube channel: “I had several offers. The markets are not easy but I made the decision with my heart, and I know that it was the best option I could choose for many factors.

“(Betis) club is constantly growing and has a coach (Manuel Pellegrini) with a lot of prominence. The truth is that I am very happy with this decision.

“I want to thank the president and the board. Years have passed but it seems like it was yesterday when I left the club I am very happy, very grateful. It was an easy decision to make.

“Since I left, people have always shown me their affection and that is important when making decisions for a player. I am guided by feelings. Let’s hope it is a great year for everyone. There is a great group and many nice objectives ahead.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Lo Celso’s talent was never in question, he never quite seemed at home in the Premier League and always picked up injuries at just the wrong time, which destroyed his chances of establishing himself in the Spurs side.

Hopefully, the 28-year-old will get back to enjoying his football again now that he is at a place he knows and loves and is able to fulfil his talent.
