‘Ridiculous’ – Chris Sutton defends Postecoglou from ‘arrogant’ criticism

Chris Sutton feels that it is ridiculous to suggest that Ange Postecoglou is unproven, given his body of work so far and what he achieved last season at Tottenham.

It has only been three matches so far but the knives are already seemingly out for Postecoglou, with some Spurs fans questioning whether his system can work in the Premier League.

Many are not satisfied with the same problems rearing their ugly heads, with Tottenham dominating matches but being caught out defensively time and again.

However, that certainly does not represent the majority of the fan base, who still seem to be completely behind the Australian.

Postecoglou himself remains adamant that there are signs of progress, insisting that his side will get their rewards if they keep producing this level of performance (The Standard).

Chris Sutton leaps to Postecoglou’s defence

When one Spurs fan called in to suggest that the 59-year-old has no pedigree at the highest level to prove that he can compete with the best teams in the Premier League, Sutton was having none of it.

The former Celtic striker responded on BBC 606 (02/09/24): “That is ridiculous to say he has no pedigree. He’s been coaching for 25 years.

“He’s had success in Japan, Australia and Scotland. That is slightly arrogant. He progressed the team last season, he lost Harry Kane, and he finished fifth, that is progress.”

Given the way that we ended last season, there was always going to be some discontent if we did not pick up results at the start of the new season, and that is exactly how it has turned out.

While the criticism of Ange’s system for being too open is fair, the Australian is not getting the credit he deserves for our play in possession. So far, in the three games, we have also had much more control than we did last season.
