Ange Postecoglou is backing James Maddison to get back into the England squad sooner rather than later, revealing that the attacking midfielder is desperate to force himself back in.

Maddison has been one of Tottenham’s best players in their first two league games of the season, with the 27-year-old showcasing the kind of inventive and enterprising play that made him unplayable before his injury last season.

That would please Spurs fans as the Lilywhites tend to create a lot of chances when the former Leicester man is in this kind of form as he remains the main creative fulcrum of the side.

Despite his impressive displays and the fact that he has two assists to his name, the Tottenham star was left out of Lee Carsley’s first England squad which was announced last week for their upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Maddison is desperate for an England recall

Postecoglou has no doubts that Maddison will soon be back in the Three Lions set-up if he keeps playing as well as he is at the moment.

When asked about the midfielder’s omission from the England squad, the Spurs boss said (via IrishNews): “I think he’s started the season really well and had an impact in both games. He was very close to getting on the scoresheet in both. His general play in both games has been really, really good.

“As long as he’s training well and playing well, then I’m sure he will be back in England reckoning and I guess it is a question for Lee for future camps.

“I know he desperately wants to get back into the England set-up, but if he continues to play like he does and makes more and more of an impact like we know he can, then I see no reason why he can’t get back into the England side.”

There is no doubt that Maddison at his best walks into the England squad. Had the international break been a couple of weeks later rather than right now, the likelihood is that the Tottenham man would have forced himself back in.
