Kiwanis Club of Lafayette kicks off football season with 72nd annual jamboree

LAFAYETTE PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- Friday night lights are back in Acadiana with day two of the 72nd annual Kiwanis Club of Lafayette High School Football Jamboree.

"It is an honor and a pleasure for us to be able to be a part of that and to provide that for the community and to be able to show these student-athletes they work so hard all year long," said Christian Williford, president-elect of the Kiwanis Club of Lafayette.

For more than two decades, the jamboree took place in Cajun Field. With renovations to the stadium ongoing, Kiwanis of Lafayette needed a new location for this season -- two notable schools stepped up.

"That led to us being at S.T.M. yesterday and Acadiana tonight so very grateful for those two schools for allowing us to host there," Williford said.

Day two's games were the Breaux Bridge Tigers against the Acadiana Wreckin' Rams, Comeaux Spartans against the Cecilia Bulldogs, and Northside Vikings battled St. Martinville Tigers.

The story continues below the video.

After speaking with coaches, fans and players, the atmosphere for this year's jamboree was consistent with years past and gave a real high school football game atmosphere.

Comeaux High Head Coach Marquis Newsome said he wanted to thank Acadiana High for hosting on their new field.

"Once again, the atmosphere is still great and the forward to competing," he said.

Jeremy Chevalier, who graduated from Breaux Bridge in 2021, said this is better for the team because it feels as though it is a real game.

"It's a good experience for the season for them to get ready and stuff. (you are) getting that atmosphere of high school football," he said.
