Liverpool icon reveals he would have liked to join Tottenham in another life

0 2

Tottenham Hotspur have got a certain appeal about them of late, mainly thanks to Ange Postecoglou’s famous phone calls. However, back in the day, it seems one Liverpool star could well have been tempted to join Spurs if the interest was ever there.

Carra would choose Spurs

Jamie Carragher is a one-club-man, having grown up in the Liverpool academy before going on to make 737 appearances for the Anfield outfit and cementing his status as a club legend.

The idea of him ever leaving Liverpool never really came up during his playing career anyway, but if it had, it sounds like he would have been open to joining Tottenham.

In the latest episode of The Overlap, Carragher, Gary Neville, and Ian Wright are discussing what other clubs they would have played for. While Wright admitted he might have joined Manchester United, and Neville praised the tradition of Arsenal, Carragher had a much better answer.

He said: “I’m going to go for Tottenham, and the reason I say Tottenham is because when I was a kid, they were the first team I was really aware of, besides Everton and Liverpool. My first season watching football was 1984/85, and Everton and Tottenham were going for the league.

“It was Glenn Hoddle, and I always remember this… as a kid, and it doesn’t happen anymore now because of phones and stuff, but as soon as the Everton game would finish, there was always a betting shop that you would go to if you lost your dad at the match.

“And even though I was only 7 or 8, I remember as a kid, it was always ‘How have Tottenham got on?’ and that was the first thing in the back of my mind. We’re going for the league with Tottenham… I sort of liked the Hoddle, Waddle era, I loved the stadium… and you know what, I scored three goals for them.”

Carragher’s career at a glance

Carragher is of course referring to the own goals he has scored in his career, with three of them coming against Tottenham.

Although he’s a Liverpool icon now, Carragher was an Everton fan growing up, but found his way in the red half of Merseyside.

He won the Champions League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the UEFA Cup with Liverpool, and would very likely not have wanted to swap that career for anything, even if Tottenham did come calling.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s nice to hear pundits describing Tottenham with such reverence and respect, and we need to make sure that comes back in a big way. A trophy win and a push at the title would definitely get us back to that kind of stature.
