‘Magnificant’ – Alan Shearer blown away by Tottenham duo against Everton

Alan Shearer has lavished praise on Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven for the way they read danger and mopped everything up so calmly at the back against Everton.

There has been a lot said and written about the fact that Tottenham were clinical and ruthless in the final third on Saturday, putting four past a hapless Everton side.

That would have certainly delighted Ange Postecolgou on the back of what he saw at the King Power Stadium, where the Lilywhites looked indecisive in the final third.

However, Postecoglou would have also been over the moon with what he saw at the other end of the pitch, with his side managing to keep Everton and bay and emerge with a clean sheet.

In fact, the Toffees hardly looked like scoring in open play, with Romero and Van de Ven not giving the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto a sniff all game.

Shearer praised Tottenham’s centre-back duo for their defending while also giving a special mention to Van de Ven’s run and assist for the home side’s fourth goal.

The Newcastle legend said on BBC Match of the Day: “Bearing in mind this is 3-0 up, late into the 70th minute. Van de Ven – and Cristian Romero – I thought were magnificent.

“Look at this break there from Van de Ven, no one can get near him! Then he passes it into Son who puts it away really, really well through the legs of Pickford.”

Keeping Romero and Van de Ven fit will be crucial to Tottenham’s chances of breaking into the top three this season.

While we do have a very reliable backup in Radu Dragusin, the Argentine’s leadership and the insurance that the Dutchman’s pace provides, cannot be replaced.
