Jerod Mayo Shares Injury Update On Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett

The New England Patriots still appeared to have a starting quarterback competition entering Sunday's preseason finale.

That got off to a rocky start when veteran Jacoby Brissett took a shot when Washington Commanders edge rusher KJ Henry sacked the New England quarterback. Brissett suffered a shoulder injury and played in just one series before giving way to rookie Drake Maye.

Even with the injury, head coach Jerod Mayo shared that a brief start for Brissett had been the plan entering the game for the Patriots.

"That was the plan," Mayo told reporters, per team-provided video. "We were going to play Jacoby a series or two and get Drake in."

Regarding the shoulder injury, Mayo shared that Brissett "would have been able to continue" in the game if needed and would follow up with him on Monday.

"I talked to him, we'll see tomorrow" Mayo said. "You always feel a little more sore the next day. He said he was good. We'll find out tomorrow."

Mayo previously expressed that the Patriots could come to a decision on their Week 1 starting quarterback as early as Monday or Tuesday after this game.

So, is that still the case for Mayo and the New England brain trust?

"That's always the goal," Mayo added. "As I always say, I reserve the right to change my mind. In saying that, we gotta watch the film. We get in at three o'clock in the morning. We'll see if I can get through all the film on the plane."
