0 0

One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty will be screened at this year’s Louth International Film Festival at An Tain Arts Centre on Saturday, September 28th at 12.35pm.

The Emmy award-winning documentary chronicles the inspiring life of Jimmy Hasty, a one-armed footballer from Belfast who went on to become a legendary figure in Dundalk FC’s history.

After losing his left arm at age 14, Hasty defied the odds to become a key player for the Lilywhites, helping them to the League of Ireland title and a historic win over FC Zurich in the European Cup in 1963.

Eleven years later, on October 11th, 1974, Jimmy became a victim of The Troubles when he was gunned down at point-blank range by a paramilitary on the streets of Belfast. He died at the age of 38.

This 27-minute film, which won the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Short Documentary at the 45th annual Sports Emmy Awards in New York in May, will be followed by a Q&A session with director Rich Milway from NOAH Media and Dundalk FC head of media and communications Gavin McLaughlin.

‘One-Armed Wonder: The Extraordinary Story of Jimmy Hasty’ includes contributions from Jimmy’s former Dundalk teammates John Murphy, Davy McArdle and Francie Callan, audio excerpts from the late Jim Malone – the man who brought Jimmy to Oriel Park – and interviews with Jimmy’s wife Margaret Sheppard, and his sons Paul and Martin.

Admission to the event is free. Click here for more information about the Louth International Film Festival.
