Mark Lawrenson predicts whether Spurs will finish in the top four this season

Mark Lawrenson has predicted Tottenham Hotspur to finish in fifth place, backing Aston Villa to once again pip the Lilywhites to the final guaranteed Champions League spot.

Spurs fans are expecting to see an improvement from the side this year as Ange Postecoglou enters his second season at the club, with the majority of the players now used to the Australian’s system.

The 58-year-old has also been able to put his own print on the squad, which now looks very different to the one he took over last year.

Postecoglou has made it clear that his aim is to close the gap with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal, telling Men in Blazers earlier this week that the club should be aiming to win silverware.

However, Lawrenson expects the campaign to end in disappointment for Tottenham, insisting that the North London side will once again have to make do with a fifth-place finish.

The pundit backed Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City to finish in the top three once again.

Speaking about the race for fourth, he told Paddy Power: “I don’t think Manchester United are good enough, it won’t be Chelsea, and I’m not sure Tottenham have the quality so I’ll go for Aston Villa.

“They’ve made some really interesting signings and we know Unai Emery is a good manager. I love the way they play so I’m backing Aston Villa to come fourth.

I fancy Tottenham to just miss out on that top four again, I think they’ll come fifth. I wonder if Newcastle will keep getting better, they’ve got a good manager and a good squad.”

I do not mind the fact that most pundits are writing us off and that we go into the season as underdogs.

However, we know that expectations can change quite rapidly depending on how various sides start the season.
