Man Utd have held talks to sign £115k-a-week star who's won 7 league titles - Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United are looking for a new midfielder this summer and they have been linked with multiple names over the past few weeks.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte seems the priority target for the Red Devils, but they still need to find a suitable agreement for him.

Speaking to The United Stand, Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that United have also held discussions with the agent of Adrien Rabiot.

The Frenchman is reportedly ‘asking for important money’, having turned down a net salary of £6 million per year to continue at Juventus.

Romano added that there is ‘nothing advanced’ at the moment.

United should avoid approach for Rabiot

The Red Devils require a marquee defensive midfielder. Rabiot has the ability to play in the number six role, but he is predominantly a central midfielder.

The Frenchman had a passing accuracy of only 84 percent last term with 5.7 duels and 1.9 tackles won per game. He made an average of 4.8 ball recoveries.

In comparison, Ugarte fared much better in all aspects. The 23-year-old completed 91 percent of his passes with 6.4 duels and 3.9 tackles won per outing.

The Uruguayan managed more than seven ball recoveries on average for the French champions.

Rabiot is currently available on a free transfer after parting ways with Juventus, but his wage demands could be significant aside from a huge signing-on bonus.

The midfielder was earning £115,000 after tax at the Bianconeri. He was probably on a gross salary of around £200,000 per week during his five years in Turin.

Keeping this in mind, the seven-time league winner could easily demand £250,000 per week or more to join United. His agent/mother could demand a big commission too.

In our opinion, a free transfer for Rabiot would represent a backward step. He could be past his prime in a few years’ time and won’t provide an upgrade on Casemiro.

United should concentrate on landing the signature of Ugarte. The Red Devils could persuade Les Parisiens to accept a loan if they include an obligation to buy.
