Lyon sign Forest defender

0 20

Olympique Lyonnais have officially confirmed the signing of defender Moussa Niakhate from Nottingham Forest. OL have paid a fee of around 32 million euros- believed to be a record purchase for the club, and the 28-year-old has inked a four-year deal that will keep him at the Groupama Stadium till the summer of 2028.

Niakhate started his senior career at Valenciennes before joining Metz in 2017. He then moved to the Bundesliga by joining Metz in 2018 and had a four-year stint there before joining Forest in the summer of 2022.

Niakhate is not the first purchase Lyon have made from a Premier League club in this summer transfer window- they’ve signed Belgian midfielder Orel Mangala (also from Forest) and Said Benrahma from West Ham United.

After a dreadful start to the 23/24 season, Lyon recovered in the second half of the campaign to finish 6th in the league, which was enough for them to secure Europa League football for 2024/25. They were 18th in Ligue 1 after the first 14 match weeks, winning just one game in that period.

Forest finished 17th in the Premier League last season and will start 24/25 with a home fixture against Bournemouth at the City Ground.
