Man Utd could now pay £55m to sign £75m star praised by Ruud van Nistelrooy - report

Manchester United could make a third offer to sign defender Jarrad Branthwaite following Everton’s failed takeover, according to The Telegraph.

The Red Devils have made two bids of £45 million and £50 million respectively for the England international, who is valued at £75m by the Toffees.

It was recently reported that the door had closed for United to sign Branthwaite following Everton’s £50m agreement with Aston Villa for Amadou Onana.

However, the scenario has definitely changed with billionaire Dan Friedkin pulling the plug on an Everton takeover amid concerns over the level of debt.

The Red Devils could now be encouraged to make a fresh bid of around £55m to test the resolve of the Merseyside outfit, who need plenty of funds.

United handed boost in Branthwaite pursuit

The Toffees have been reluctant to lower their demands for Branthwaite and their position became stronger after Villa’s agreement to purchase Onana.

However, their situation has completely changed with Friedkin’s decision to pull out from buying the club. This could force them into cashing in on Branthwaite.

It is quite clear from the start that United are unlikely to meet the £75m asking price. They could now propose to pay £50m up front with £5m in add-ons.

Branthwaite has already agreed personal terms over a contract worth £160,000 per week and a move could be fairly straightforward if a transfer fee is agreed.

United will obviously need to compensate his arrival with player sales. There is a possibility that both Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire could be sold this summer.

Branthwaite has the ability to play in both central defensive positions. He was hugely praised by Ruud van Nistelrooy for the same during his time at PSV on loan.
