Tottenham second-half player ratings: 5-1 pre-season win over Hearts

Tottenham Hotspur took on Hearts this evening to kick-off their pre-season fixtures for the summer, putting five past the Scottish side to record a comfortable 5-1 win.

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Tottenham second half players ratings vs Hearts

Alfie Whiteman – 6 – Made a couple of comfortable stops but didn’t have much else to do. He could do nothing to stop the Hearts goal after that calamitous defending.

Djed Spence – 9 – A surprise inclusion to the squad today but Spence made his mark by drifting in off the right and sliding a superb assist through to Lankshear. He then added a goal to his game by tapping a cross home at the far post. Should have even had a second assist, but Veliz spooned his shot over the bar. Is… is there a chance for him at Spurs after all?

Emerson Royal – 4 – He was on for 30 seconds before giving the ball away in his own box and gifting Hearts a goal. Didn’t have much to do after that.

Ashley Phillips – 7 – Looked solid at the back. It’s always nice having an actual centre-back playing at centre-back. Even managed to grab himself a goal at the end, bundling a rebound over the line. I do wonder whether Spurs will end up using him as the fourth-choice CB this season, or whether he might be loaned out again.

Max Robson – 6 – Came on at half-time to play at left-back and was very neat and tidy with his work. You can see why he is trusted to cover a variety of positions at youth level – very versatile.

Alfie Devine – 6 – Played a little deeper and wasn’t as involved as the likes of Bergvall, Moore and Lankshear, but still looked nice and creative in short bursts. Likely needs a good loan spell this year.

Tyrese Hall – 6 – Very highly rated at Tottenham. We only saw a couple of glimpses of Hall at his line-breaking best, but he was always very neat and tidy on the ball. I want to see him get some minutes in the season as an understudy to the likes of Yves Bissouma.

Lucas Bergvall – 8 – Assisted Tottenham’s third with a lovely turn and pass between the lines, setting Moore away. Gave the ball away a few times, but that was because he was always trying to make things happen. What a cross to create Tottenham’s fifth goal! Looks a really exciting talent.

Mikey Moore – 8.5 – Another goal for Mikey Moore after his finish behind closed doors against Cambridge. Collected the ball on the right side of the box and drifted inside before finishing past the Hearts keeper. He was electric every time he picked the ball up – and he’s still just 16!

Timo Werner – 7 – Looked really rusty out there until the 72nd minute when he danced past his man and drilled a typical Werner cross in across the face, which was tapped home by Spence.

Will Lankshear – 7 – That’s why Spurs just signed him to a new five-year contract! A clinical striker’s finish after being slid through on goal by Spence.

Substitutes:

Alejo Veliz – 5 – Looked really dangerous but couldn’t find the back of the net. You can tell he hasn’t played regular football in a while. Got his feet muddled when he should have just tapped the ball home, then put another shot high over the bar when he should have found the back of the net.

Dane Scarlett -5 – Weirdly, Lankshear started the half, was then replaced by Veliz, and Scarlett then replaced Veliz when the Argentine picked up a face injury. It would seem to imply that Scarlett has fallen away down the pecking order, or is perhaps close to a loan move. Should have scored with a point-blank header at the death and wasted an open goal chance from a tight angle.
