Report: Spanish club ‘will wait patiently’ in an attempt to get a Tottenham discount

Giovanni Lo Celso has been a subject of interest for a number of clubs following his stuttering Spurs season, with Real Betis included in the chasing pack.

Lo Celso looks to be on the way out of Tottenham

The 28-year-old midfielder has retained some transfer value as a result of his impressive displays on his numerous loans and on the international stage for Argentina.

European giants, Barcelona were even taking a forensic look at signing Lo Celso in January of this year with Sky Sports claiming former manager, Xavi ‘identified’ Lo Celso as a ‘top target’.

Estadio Deportivo in Spain claim that Lo Celso has already turned down an offer, due to it being from a Saudi Arabian side which he reportedly ‘completely discards’, with Lo Celso instead wanting to ‘claim himself again in La Liga’.

Transfer speculation has been encouraged by the fact that Lo Celso has been enduring a lot of time off the pitch at Tottenham this season despite Fabrizio Romano reporting on X in September 2023 that the player wouldn’t join Galatasaray who were ‘interested since July’ as Postecoglou wanted to keep him’.

Lo Celso could return to Real Betis this summer

Spanish media are appearing to become increasingly confident of Real Betis securing the return of Lo Celso, despite the club’s sporting director describing their chances as ‘remote’ when speaking to AS.

ABC Sevilla reports that contacts have been going on for ‘some time’ between Lo Celso and his former club with the feeling reportedly being ‘mutual’ between the two parties across the ‘various meetings that have already taken place’.

The report continues claiming that Betis will be utilising some of Daniel Levy’s tactics to sign to Argentine international, with ABC Sevilla claiming Los Verdiblancos will ‘wait until the end of the window’ in an attempt to secure the signing for ‘something below €10 million’.

Although Lo Celso has shown on numerous occasions that he possesses the ability to play at a top level, validated by his consistent involvements in a World Cup-winning Argentina squad.

However, it’s been another season characterised by injuries for the 28-year-old who’s missed a frustrating fourteen games this season alone (TransferMarkt).

With a year remaining on his deal too it may be time for Tottenham to bite the bullet on the €48 million investment they made and cash in this summer. (TransferMarkt)

For Lo Celso himself, Real Betis would likely be an ideal move. Returning to a club where he was adored with a guarantee of playing time could suit him perfectly, his recent loans to Villarreal were successful and proved he can still very much shine in Spain.
