Tom Davidson Obituary

0 2

It is with great sadness that the Club have learned of the passing of former Raith Rovers player Tom Davidson, aged 78.

Tom passed away on Monday 28th of May 2024 peacefully at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

Tom signed for Raith Rovers on the 25th of May 1966 from Arniston Rangers. He went on to make 39 appearances.

Edinburgh-born Tom started playing rugby at school, before switching to play football at the age of 15. He very quickly showed his ability when he was selected to represent Scotland at youth level.

After a successful time playing for juvenile side Edinburgh Norton, Tom signed for Arniston Rangers.

Only five years after switching sports (at the age of 20), Tom was signed by George Farm for Raith Rovers and he played nine times in the Club’s promotion winning team of 1966/67, helping the team make their way to the Scottish top division after an absence of four seasons.

Tom started the following season in the first team, after regular centre-half Willie Polland was recovering from a broken leg. One of his notable games was a 3-3 draw with Glasgow Rangers at Ibrox, where his performance brought some very creditable reviews. He was part of the Rovers team that defied the odds to remain in the Scottish First Division in season 1967/68.

While playing at Raith Rovers, Tom studied to be a certified accountant, where he worked part-time in an accountant’s office in Edinburgh after his day’s training in Kirkcaldy.

Four years after signing, Tom moved on to play for Berwick Rangers.

Over the years, Tom Davidson served Berwick Rangers as a player making over 200 appearances and scoring eight goals. He also served Berwick as a captain and coach, before becoming a Director, Chairman, CEO and scout.

He also became Tranent Juniors’ player-manager before having a time as Preston Athletic’s manager.

He was also a long serving member of the SFA Council, as well as an Honorary Lifetime Member of the SFA and served as a Scottish League Management Committee member.

He was a founding member of Port Seton Burns Club in East Lothian, where he this year gave the Selkirk Grace at their Burns Supper.

Raith Rovers wishes to pass sincere condolences to Agnes and family – Andrew, Susan, Louise and Craig, as well as the four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Tom’s funeral will take place on Thursday 20th of June 2024 at Warriston Crematorium Lorimer Chapel at 11am.
