Ange Postecoglou admits he is happy for Spurs to steer talks over signing forward

Ange Postecoglou has curiously suggested that Tottenham’s decision on Timo Werner will depend on the ‘negotiations’ between his club and RB Leipzig.

Werner faces a nervous wait to find out what the future holds for him this summer after the forward was left out of the Germany squad for the Euros.

It was reported by Bild earlier this week that Tottenham have not clarified to Leipzig yet if they plan on activating the €17m (£14.5m) option to buy the player permanently, with the clause being active until June 14.

However, the report hinted that Werner would prefer to continue in North London and suggested that whatever happens with Spurs, his time at the Red Bull Arena is expected to come to an end this summer.

Postecoglou has now said that he is ‘comfortable’ with the situation, revealing that Tottenham’s recruitment team are now steering the negotiations to land the former Chelsea man.

When asked about Spurs’ decision regarding Werner, the Australian told Football.London: “I think from our perspective there’s a deadline there. Again a lot of that will depend on the negotiations between the clubs and how Timo feels.

“Again, from my perspective, I’m comfortable with that situation and I’ll let the other guys steer it to see what kind of outcome there is.”

The fact that Spurs are holding any negotiations at all with Leipzig perhaps suggests that they want to sign Werner for an amount lower than his stipulated release clause.

Reading between the lines of Ange’s statement, it sounds like he would be happy to have Werner for the right fee but he would also not mind moving on to other options if the deal is not right for Tottenham.
