Report: Why Spurs will get more Premier League prize money than Aston Villa this season

Tottenham Hotspur may have finished behind Aston Villa in the Premier League table, but the Lilywites will pull in £2m more than their rivals when it comes to prize money thanks to their prominence in televised games.

Throughout the Premier League season, Tottenham and Aston Villa continuously traded places in the battle for fourth place, but it was Unai Emery’s side that came out on top and secured Champions League football for next season.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men will now prepare for Europa League football instead, and a busy transfer window lies ahead as Spurs look to bolster their squad for the next phase of the Australian’s transformative project at the club.

Premier League prize money explained

It will come as a boost, then, that Spurs can expect a payout of around £164m from the Premier League when it comes to prize money and broadcast payments. And, according to finance expert Chris Weatherspoon, that’s higher than Aston Villa’s bonus.

Put simply, there are six sources of income for Premier League clubs when it comes to broadcasting payments. All 20 clubs receive an equal share of the pots for central commercial payment, domestic share, and overseas share, and these amount to two-thirds of the total income.

The remaining money is paid on a merit-based system for domestic TV, overseas TV, and a fee per game broadcast. This is where Spurs have the upper hand, as they had their games shown on television more, leading to a £164m payment compared to Villa’s £161.8m.

However, it is thought Villa will pocket around £64m for their participation in the Champions League next season.

Spurs Web Opinion

That extra £2.2m means very little in the grand scheme of things, especially when you see what Villa are going to get for Champions League football anyway. Still, with the financial position our club is in, prize money really shouldn’t dictate how we operate in the transfer market.
