College Football Today: LSU’s New Field General

FSU has asked the NCAA to reduce and rescind the penalties it received for NIL-related recruiting violations; Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium won’t be undergoing the massive renovation originally proposed; and WR Dakorien Moore — a five-star 2025 recruit — has reneged on his commitment to LSU.

LSU Has Another New QB

So with Moore decommiting from LSU as mentioned above, the Tigers will be looking to other receivers to help ease the transition into a new starting quarterback.

With Jayden Daniels going second overall in the draft to the Washington Commanders, LSU has now lost two Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks to the pros in the last five years (you may remember some kid named Joe Burrow).

That leaves fourth-year Tiger Garrett Nussmeier as the new lead QB at Louisiana State. He’s not completely inexperienced, having thrown 219 passes over the last three seasons as a backup, and that shows up in his ranking (82nd) among On3’s Top 100 College Football Players.

Yes, there will be some growing pains, but given what he’s shown in limited duty, expect his learning curve to be short. Last year, Nussmeier wasn’t quite as accurate, but he was not sacked and managed to mostly avoid getting picked, so there were signs of growth. And for what it’s worth, Daniels believes in him…

A pocket passer type, Nussmeier can distribute the ball virtually anywhere from his safe place, but he’s not gifted with an elite arm, even if there may still be some upside in it.

Unless he surprises us a lot of people with his development this season, he’s unlikely to be drafted in 2025, but will probably wind up getting signed as an UDFA.

Yellow Jackets On the Rise

Since bottoming out in 2021 with a 3-9 record, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have slowly been rebuilding their program. They improved to five victories in 2022 before last season posting their first winning record since 2018.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets have a very tough schedule this season and it starts right from the outset on August 24 against Florida State in Ireland (GT is currently 11.5 point underdogs as per FanDuel).

So while big time success may still be a ways off, that hasn’t stopped the school from continuing to build for the future. For instance, the Yellow Jackets are one of a half dozen schools still in the running to add four-star OLB Herbert Scroggins III in 2025.

He’s reportedly received scholarship offers from around 25 schools, so the fact that Georgia Tech is down to the final six is impressive. A Savannah, Georgia native, Scroggins checks in at 6’3″, 233. This season, as a Grade 11 student, he racked up 84 tackles, with an impressive 10 of them for a loss.

RotoRob Tune of the Day

William Michael Joseph Whelan is better known simply as Bill Whelan, the Irish composer who has been at it since 1970. In 1995, he released Riverdance: Music from the Show, featuring the track “The Countess Cathleen/Women of the Sidhe.”
