Heartbreak for Spurs player as he misses out on national squad for the Euros

Timo Werner has suffered the heartbreak of being left out of the Germany squad for the European Championship back in his home country.

Part of Werner’s motivation in making the loan move to Spurs during the January transfer window would have been to force himself into the reckoning for the Germany squad, with the forward having struggled for game time at the Red Bull Arena.

The 28-year-old certainly showed during his spell at N17 that he has a lot to offer, making some key contributions in the final third but his campaign ended early after he picked up an injury in the North London Derby earlier this month.

Werner is still waiting to find where he will play his football next season, with Spurs yet to communicate to Leipzig if they plan on activating €17m (£14.5m) clause to sign him permanently, which is active until June 14.

Timo Werner will not be going to the Euros with Germany

The forward has now found out that he will not be playing in the home Euros as he failed to make Julian Nagelsmann’s preliminary 27-man squad for the tournament.

The Germany boss has chosen to name a relatively young squad, which includes four players without a single senior international cap, including Maximilian Beier and Aleksandr Pavlovic, but there is no place for the experienced Werner.

It is unclear how much of Nagelsmann’s decision has been dictated by Werner’s injury, with the forward still on the treatment table. Either way, it would be heartbreaking for the 28-year-old to miss out on a Euros in his home country.
