Everton sporting director hints at a contract extension for 'passionate' Seamus Coleman

Everton Director of Football Kevin Thelwell has revealed that talks are underway over a potential new contract for club legend Seamus Coleman.

Coleman’s current contract with the Toffees runs out this summer, but the club are eager to retain his services for at least another campaign.

The Everton skipper has battled injury problems this season, limiting him to only 11 appearances across all competitions.

Coleman was sidelined for the opening four months of the 2023/24 campaign and has been in and out of the squad since recovering from his knee injury.

Nevertheless, his influence on the dressing room is unmatched – a sentiment shared not only by Sean Dyche but also by the club hierarchy.

Thelwell also lauded the Everton faithful for their ‘unwavering’ support for the team and insists he and Dyche are trying to convince Coleman to sign an extended deal this summer.

Thelwell said (via Evertonfc.com): “The backing for the team has also been unwavering – and that unity between the team and the fans is something that is so important to maintain.

“One player who has the strongest of connections with supporters, and who personifies the spirit of Everton more than anyone, is Seamus Coleman.

“He has battled injuries this season, but even when he has not been able to be part of the playing squad, his importance and impact on the team and the dressing room has remained vitally important.

“Sean [Dyche] and I have spoken to Seamus, and he understands it is our hope he continues adding to that impressive tally at Goodison next season. We will continue to talk over the coming weeks.”

Coleman became Everton’s all-time appearance-maker during the goalless draw against Aston Villa in mid-January, surpassing the previous record held by long-serving goalkeeper Tim Howard.

The Irish full-back has been on Everton’s books for 15 years, making over 400 appearances for the Blues while chipping in with 28 goals and 29 assists.

Coleman returned to the Everton starting line-up for the 1-1 draw against Luton Town and will be focused on helping the club achieve their highest finish since 2020/21 (10th).
