Sky journalist does not expect Spurs to sell experienced squad player this summer

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge has said that even though he expects Tottenham to be in the market for a left-sided centre-back in the summer, he does not expect the club to let Ben Davies leave.

Davies stepped up and delivered consistent performances at centre-back earlier this season when Tottenham were without Micky van de Ven for a few months.

The Welshman is not used to playing in central defence in a back four but he showed that he is capable of delivering solid performances in that role in Ange Postecoglou’s system.

However, question marks remain over the 30-year-old’s ability to play as an inverted left-back, with the former Swansea man not providing the kind of thrust that Destiny Udogie does in that role.

Postecoglou confirmed earlier this month that despite the options he has at the back, Tottenham will look to sign another central defender when the transfer market reopens in June (Football.London).

Ben Davies is expected to remain at Tottenham

When asked if Spurs will go for a left-sided defender and what such a signing will mean for Davies’ future, Bridge has now told GiveMeSport: “Ben Davies is reliable in terms of squad depth, in terms of experience, and leadership. He can also play on the left side of central defence.

“I think we saw in the previous game that Radu Dragusin came in as Micky Van de Ven was injured but on that left-hand side and it was a difficult afternoon for him.

“So I think a left-footed centre-back will be another target for Spurs in the summer. I don’t think Spurs will be rushing the likes of Ben Davies out the door, even if it’s just a squad member.”

My suspicion is that Tottenham will move on Emerson Royal and sign a full-back like Kyle Walker-Peters, who is primarily a right-back but can also play on the other side if necessary.

The club will likely also sign another up-and-coming left-sided centre-back while hanging on to Ben Davies, who can be used as cover for multiple positions.

Postecoglou will want a fairly big squad to be able to compete on multiple fronts, especially with the Champions League entering its new format and having more games next season.
