Daniel Farke post Millwall

Daniel, congratulations! Clinical is one word but how would you describe that victory today?

I'm proud of my guys today because I've played here several times at The Den, I know it's an unbelievably tough place to go and you have to be on it. You have to be there with a pretty complex performance. I know we as a club, have also waited I think more than a decade to be here with three points. You have to be spot on, this what we did today because the periods of the game when you have to show some steel and resilience. You have to be there and show exactly this qualities because you can't avoid all these long balls and all the long throw ins and out of this and sometimes it’s a corner kick and then to defend Cooper who is three metres tall
Yeah, it’s so difficult, you have to dig in and you have to give your life in this moment and also to stay cool and mentally strong and wait for the moments when you can calm the game down and when you can shine and let your quality shine. That's what we did today, I would say amazing, amazing team goals. When I think about the first goal you can put it straightaway into a book anyhow and sell it because it's so wonderful. I'm pretty pleased for this.

For me the most important topic to return back from such a tough place with a clean sheet for the dressing room and yes, to score three goals it's amazing. Pretty, pretty proud of the performance.

On the clean sheet, then, how important was Joe Rodon particularly today?
The whole team. I wouldn't speak too much about just one player because it was also important that our offensive players did their job, they had pressure on the build-up they also came back once they were overplayed, midfield centre was quite crucial. Obviously also our last row and Joe belongs to our last row and obviously he had to be there and with many clearances, there was aerial threat and he was a little cut under his eyebrow. He was willing to go so he showed then like warrior mentality and this is exactly what you need. If you want to be successful, such a tough place. I think he was excellent.

You’ve got a lot of options going forward but concentrating on Piroe and Rutter today. How important and how pleasing was it for you that Rutter scored today?
I'm always happy when my offensive players are there also was good assists, also like Dan James came in was there with two assists, Jaidon Anthony was there with a good chance. I think it was also quite close with to a penalty in this moment. It's always good for the confidence of my offensive players when they are capable to score and also the relationship between Rutter and Piroe was quite good. I got the feeling in the last game that Joel was sometimes a bit too deep in his positioning and we played it today even a bit more flexible from the position. Also together with the wingers more fluent and obviously they play not that long together and it's also difficult for them but I got the feeling from day to day it's improving you can sense and feel this also on the training pitch. Yes, I'm happy that they were able to bring it on the pitch like this today because we're definitely three fantastic goals.

Spence and Cooper weren’t involved today. We know there’s a knee issue from Djed Spence. How close were they, will they be involved Wednesday? And Ampadu, what's the outcome with him as well because he took a knock at the end?
Yeah, he took a knock but he's also a fighter, so I hope it's not too bad. I hope it's just a bruise and he will be available. Now obviously is a quick turnaround also bit strange because I mentioned that our next opponent had a home game on Friday evening and next game on Wednesday evening also at home and we are there with two away games, Sunday, Wednesday, feels a bit strange.
But anyway we can't change it and we concentrate on things where we can influence. Yes, sadly sad news with Spence because Djed has done his lateral ligaments. He will be out for several weeks so we wait for further assessment. It seems like no surgery is needed but we have to wait for the further assessment. He will definitely miss out the next weeks. We will have to wait but to give you a timeframe for this but he's definitely out for a few weeks.
Liam is back in training and that's definitely good news. First time fully back in training it was on Thursday. We decided OK, he is our skipper and we want to have him back as quick as possible with his experience, his quality, his influence also in the dressing room. But he was out for more than six weeks and then just two training sessions was not enough because we've also proper group. I think a few more days on the training pitch will be beneficial but I'm also quite sure that pretty soon he's available also for the matchday squad.

This is a tough place for a 17 year old to come. How much of a vote of confidence is it for Archie that you backed him and why did you stick with him?
Well, I was convinced that he would be there with a good performance, there is no guarantee but he has fulfilled all my expectations during the season so far. I also got the feeling that the international break was beneficial for him. Also the guys in his position like Glen Kamara, he was away on international duty, good for him because he was there with many minutes. Same for Ilia Gruev but it was also not possible for them to train with us to get a bit more used to how we want to play and for that we got the feeling Archie has so many strength in this game. We need also his physicality and his endurance and also his technical skills today. Obviously, it was a big challenge, the big ask today for 17 year old guy because I know how impressive The Den can be but I have to say how he handled this today was top class. He has fulfilled all my expectations and yes, tonight you can be pretty proud of himself. But from tomorrow on I will hold the pressure high and he has to keep working because we've got a good group but today, he was fantastic.

Did you expect to profit on the counter attack as much as you did or did you expect to have more possession?
Depends also bit on the story of the game. Obviously the first five minutes, Millwall put lots of pressure on us and you can't do anything against us because they had more like the first kick and they put the ball upfront, you have to defend long ball, out of this a corner kick then throw ins, it's more like five minutes. You just have to dig in when you're not on the ball. You have to accept this, it's a tough place

Obviously we had also good spells in terms of possession but then if you lead for such a long time, it's quite natural that the home team was also a good side, I expect them also to be in the mix and then the end of the season because they will also fight for the playoffs. Definitely. So they try to invest more and try to put long balls in and try to put some pressure on us. I think we had still slightly more push possession than them but then normally, you can defend also something you're not there with 80% possession or something like this. Normally, you have a bit more space and then you can also show your quality and counter attacks and this was also important was the first time more or less for us that we scored the first goal in all competitive games and obviously it opened and also a bit more a bit more space and what we're capable to do if we have a bit more space, that's what we what we show today. So was pretty pleased with the strength in our game today

Does it feel especially important to have begun this second phase, after the international break, in this manner?
Yes definitely, because the momentum in this league can change unbelievably quickly and before we were speaking about yes, it would be good if we picked up some points at a tough place, but now we are speaking about back-to-back clean sheets, seven points from the last three games and four games unbeaten. It feels like a team of the moment a bit, but I am never over the moon after a victory or too down after a setback. This league is relentless, you have to prepare yourself in every possible manner for each and every game. We can’t afford to celebrate too much, but definitely for the rhythm confidence and mood, and for the table the three points are priceless.

We saw you with the away fans at the end, that’s the first time you’ve had that moment with the fans after, how important is that connection for you to build that connection
We had it also after Ipswich, that was good fun and I have to say I also like to win games at Ipswich it was also not too bad. What can I say about our fans, they are probably the best fans in the whole country and it’s amazing. I know we are playing in the second tier right now but they are a supporter base of the top tier. It was the best supporters in the whole country, unbelievable at home and away, the atmosphere at Elland Road is magic and our away fans are important to carry us through difficult periods. To give something back is important and to us as a team it is important, so I will always send my players to the supporters because we need this relationship there. The strength of this club is the most important and we need to make sure we value this as well, they deserve that we show appreciation because they were there for us for the whole game, the whole 95 minutes and it was amazing

Were you surprised you were able to keep Georginio Rutter in the summer, because it hasn’t been easy for him here?
Not surprised. I was of course hoping it would work out and there was lots of interest in him, also big names all of Europe tried everything, but he was quite committed so although he had a tough start to life at this club, he sensed there was more in it, wanted to prove his worth and pay something back and show I am a top class player. I am urging them all to keep going and for me, quality is just there over a long term period, so I am not willing to sing high praises after just a few games and after a really good performance, right now Joel with three goals and Georgi with two goals, come on, you have to show this consistency day in, day out in a long season, then we can speak about it. If he works on the training pitch, in the games and shows such a commitment, such a work ethic, he’s on the right path, but not just him, all the other players as well.

The starters did well and then Dan James came on and really helped, added something extra, how will that help you to keep the standards high and drive it?
We need all the players and also competition and depth in the squad. We have 46 games and two cup competitions, so with the speed of the game, it is not possible for each and every player to be there with more than 50 games on the top level. We need competition and opportunities, I am also quite sure there will be games where we will find it tough to score goals. Then we have to stick together and dig in. At least one player is there with a top class performance and scores a decisive goal, if you do that like today with many offensive players including end product, even better
