Arsenal allow striker Folarin Balogun to join Championship promotion chasers

00

Arsenal have allowed striker Folarin Balogun to leave the club and he has become Middlesbrough’s third January signing after joining the Championship outfit on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 20-year-old has made just two Premier League appearances for the Gunners during the current campaign and scored twice in five Europa League outings last season. Balogun has appeared four times in the cups for Arsenal this term and scored twice in the EFL trophy, but Mikel Arteta has allowed him to leave for some game time.

Boro boss Chris Wilder told the club’s official website: “We’re delighted to get Flo in. He’s a player I’ve known about for a long time and we identified him as someone who could come in and improve us in the second half of the season.

“He has great movement, good pace, and he’s a natural finisher. We’re looking forward to working with him.”

England Under-21 international Balogun follows Brighton frontman Aaron Connolly and permanent signing Caolan Boyd-Munce to Teesside this month.

Boro, who have won five of their last six league games, currently lie in seventh place in the table just a point shy of the play-off places.

For Arsenal it leaves Eddie Nketiah’s future more clear.

There were doubts whether the 22-year-old would look to move on this month. But Arteta has confirmed the former Leeds loanee is staying.

“He’s our player and he’s going to stay with us,” said Arteta on Wednesday.

Balogun ‘project’

For Balogun though he will get the chance to get some experience in a side gunning for promotion to the Premier League.

The New Yorker is thought of highly at The Emirates.

Speaking in October, Arteta said: “Again, with Flo (Balogun) we have a really clear project. The steps that he’s making, they are the right steps.

“Don’t forget he is really young. He hasn’t played almost any professional football, and you need to go through every phase. And don’t try to jump phases when you are not ready to do so.

“Again I’m really happy with him. He’s making the right progress and in December we will see where we are and what’s the best for him as well.”
