Photo Gallery: Joe Biden at the first Philadelphia Union home game

The 46th president of the U.S. was part of the festivities at Lincoln Financial Field on April 10, 2010

Joseph R. Biden’s inauguration today as the 46th President of the United States has sparked another round of people sharing photos online taken of the then Vice President at Lincoln Financial Field on April 10, 2010.

Biden was there for the club’s first ever home game against DC United and posed for photos on the field with granddaughter Natalie and USMNT legend Walter Bahr, a Philly native and member of the 1950 World Cup team who died in 2018. Biden also posed for photos with both starting XIs for the game (you’ll notice Fred snuck in a special guest in the Union photo) and then Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

Prior to his election as president in November, the Scranton, Pa. native and longtime Delaware senator’s visit was most remembered for the delays it caused fans getting into the stadium. Now, it’s become a link to the new administration.

The Union beat DC United 3-2 that day behind a Sébastien Le Toux hat trick (4’, 40’, 80’). Once everyone was able to get past the ramped up security and Secret Service presence to find their seats there were 34,870 fans there to witness history.
