10 Super Eagles stars who are in contention to make their Nations Cup debut in 2019

Three-time African champions, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be returning to the continent’s foremost football tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the Total African Cup of Nations in 2019.

It will be the 32nd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, and Nigeria’s 18th appearance, at the continent’s most glamorous football tournament.

For most Super Eagles players that will make Gernot Rohr’s 23-man list, it will be a new hunting ground as Nigeria make a comeback after missing two editions.

In the report, Legit.ng preview 10 Super Eagles stars, who are likely to make their first Nations Cup appearance “barring any unforeseen circumstances” during Africa’s football showpiece.

William Troost-Ekong (Udinese/ Serie A)

William Troost-Ekong played all Super Eagles three matches in Russia and was impressive during the qualifying rounds of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Cup (AFCON).

The hard-tackling defender, who is performing decently at Udinese has featured 28 times for Nigeria, scoring once.

Leon Balogun Brighton & Hove Albion/English Premier League

The 30-year-old Leon Balogun plies his trade in the English Premier League and is poised to earn his first AFCON bow for Nigeria.

Balogun is expected to partner Troost in the heart of Eagles back four as Nigeria seek a fourth silverware on her return to the AFCON.

Samuel Kalu ( Bordeaux/French Ligue 1)

Samuel Kalu plays as winger for French Ligue 1 campaigners Bordeaux. A new kid on the block.

So far the 21-year-old has represented Nigeria five times since his first game for Nigeria in 2018.

Kalu scored his first l goal for Nigeria during the AFCON qualifier against Libya in Uyo.

And will be looking forward for more during the tournament in the summer.

Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City/English Premier League)

Born Onyinye Wilfred Ndidi, the 22-year-old combative midfielder, who plays for Leicester City in the English topflight is expected to play a key-role for the Gernot Rohr tutored-side in Nigeria quest for the AFCON title.

In 2018, France Football named Ndidi in the continent’s team of the year for his excellent performances .Ndidi remains an important member of the Super Eagles squad.

At the last count, he has earned 22 caps so fat, but will be looking forward to score his first goal for Nigeria at AFCON 2019.

Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City/English Premier League)

Leicester City forward Kelechi Promise Iheanacho is one Super Eagles star that will be the cynosure of all eyes when hostilities commence at the 2019 AFCON.

The 22-year-old has already proven his quality while representing Nigeria at the cadet levels.

Kelechi has excelled with the Golden Eaglets, winning the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and also represented Nigeria at the U-20 World Cup.

Iheanacho debuted for the Super Eagles in 2015 and has represented Nigeria 23 times scoring eight goals.

Alex Iwobi (Arsenal/English Premier League)

Alexander Chuka Iwobi plays as a forward for Premier League side Arsenal and Nigeria’s Super Eagles..

The 22-year-old Iwobi marked his debut for Nigeria in 2015 and has earned 21 caps, scoring five times.
