My colleague in his mid twenties spent 10 years in Mk Dons academy but never got his contract at 17. He is friends with quite a lot of players who went on to have good careers ( Danso, BT Asante, Callum Brittain, and others). The only player he ever gets excited about is someone who has just signed for my local team Chesham United Georgio Rasulo. Skill clearly not the only thing that makes a football career. He was very aware of Patrick Roberts in his academy days.
