Sports Briefs: Tam, MC field hockey remain even as rivalries heat up

In an intense MCAL field hockey playoff preview between two of the league’s top powers, Tam High and Marin Catholic battled to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday, the second time this season they have played to a tie.

Senior Sarah Cormier struck in the first half to give the Red-tailed Hawks (81-3 MCAL, 8-2-3) the lead. The Wildcats (7-2-3, 9-2-3) evened the score in the second half on a goal from senior Lolo Bosch, assisted by senior Janet Rivera.

The sophomore netminders put on a show, as Marin Catholic’s Gianna Rinaldi had six saves against 11 shots on goal. Tam’s Sierra Duncan had five saves.

Tam, Marin Catholic and Redwood (8-2, 11-5-2) are locked in a battle for the top three spots with just three weeks left before the MCAL playoffs. Tam beat Redwood twice, while Redwood beat Marin Catholic once. The Giants and Wildcats are scheduled to play again on Oct. 10.

  • Lucy Miller scored with an assist from Claire Johnson, but it wasn’t enough as Redwood fell 2-1 to Saint Joseph on Wednesday.

Tennis

Mitchell Krueger outlasted No. 2 seed Murphy Cassone to advance to the quarterfinals of the Tiburon Challenger on Thursday at Tiburon Peninsula Club. Krueger hustled for a 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 victory. Also advancing Thursday were Americans Samir Banerjee, Michael Zheng and Tyler Zink.

In doubles action, the top-seeded duo of Finn Reynolds and James Watt advanced to the semifinals with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-2 win over Zink and Patrick Harper. Also advancing were Filip Pieczonka and Kody Pearson, George Goldhoff and Theodore Wiinegar, and Benjamin Kittay and Joshua Sheehy.

  • Top-seeded Lea Ma advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sofia Johnson of Great Britain at the W35 San Rafael tournament at Marin Tennis Club on Thursday. Ma will face No. 8 Diletta Cherubini of Italy, who beat wild card Jaedan Brown. Madison Brengle takes on No. 5 seed Katarina Jokic in the other quarterfinal matchup in the top half of the bracket. In other quarterfinal action, Carolina Kuhl faces Johanne Christine Svendsen, and Madison Sieg takes on Lucciana Perez Alarcon.

Girls golf

Mila Dawson shot a season-low 42 to lead San Domenico to a 188-216 victory over host Bay School at the Presidio Golf Course on Wednesday. Lola Hu added a 47 and Alicia Wang shot her season-best 48 for the Panthers (8-1). Liza Kulczar rounded out the quartet at 51.

Boys water polo

Junior Ibuki Toshi rammed home three goals to lead San Marin to a 16-3 victory over non-league foe Petaluma on Wednesday. The Mustangs (1-3 MCAL, 9-5) also got two goals, an assist and two steals from Dylan Procopio, as well as two goals and four steals from Logan Reed. Freshman Jared Sullivan added two more goals.
