Sports briefs: Redwood tops Tam, advances to field hockey title game
Top-seeded Redwood spread the scoring around in a 3-0 victory over No. 4 Tam on Wednesday to advance to Friday’s MCAL championship game.
Sammy Haan and Julia Morrow scored unassisted goals, and Eleanor Titcombe netted a goal off an assist from Bella Wagner.
Tam was making its first postseason appearance in the program’s history.
The Giants (11-0-3) will face the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal between No. 2 University and No. 3 Marin Catholic.
The regular-season championship was not decided until the last week when Redwood handed University (9-1-4) its first league loss.
Girls tennis
Jordan Marotto, Julia Laury and Jennie Liu won at Nos. 1-3 singles, respectively, as Redwood booked its spot in the MCAL final following a 6-1 win against Marin Catholic on Tuesday. The top-seeded Giants square off against No. 2 Branson at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Novato High.
Annesley Krawitt and Ella Povio pulled out a three-set win at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, against Carly Knopf and Olivia Olson. MC’s lone win came at No. 4 singles with Ceci Hachman winning a three-setter against Charlotte Brod.
College commits
Marin Catholic baseball player Brad Burnes committed to continuing his playing career at Tufts University. Burnes led the Wildcats in home runs (seven) and RBIs (26) last season — including a walk-off homer in the eighth inning of the MCAL championship game against Redwood.
- MC’s Holly Tarantino is set to swim collegiately for the University of San Diego. Tarantino won the 200 individual medley as a junior last year at the MCAL championships.
- San Marin’s John Holtz announced Tuesday via Twitter that he will continue his baseball career at Sonoma State University for the next four years. Holtz hit .300 with 21 hits and 19 RBIs for the Mustangs as a junior.
