Marin Briefs: Giants suffer painful loss in field hockey opener
Redwood’s field hockey squad suffered a difficult loss in the season opener Thursday against powerful St. Ignatius. The Giants lost Sammy Haan to a knee injury during the game, then fell 2-0 to the host Wildcats.
The speedy Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first half, but the Giants steeled their defense in the second half to allow only one shot.
“Sometimes you bring all four quarters and it all comes together, and sometimes it’s not your day,” Redwood co-coach Aline Copp said.
The rivals are scheduled to meet againSeptember 9 in Larkspur.
Girls tennis
Tam senior Gabby Plonowski clawed out a super-tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles to cap a 7-0 victory in Wednesday’s season-opener against Archie Williams. Plonowski defeated sophomore Carly Amborn 6-1, 5-7, 10-8.
Tam started the day with singles wins by freshman sisters Lina Stuart and Maria-Jose Stuart, followed by sophomore Louise McGinness winning at No. 4 singles to give the Hawks a 3-0 overall lead. Tam then swept the doubles competition. Sophia Tiemens and Amelia Stoker held off the Trojans’ Maya Evans and Maya Sanders, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 doubles.
Golf
Marin Community Clinics is hosting a fundraiser golf tournament at Meadow Club in Fairfax on Oct. 3. Registration is due by Sept. 7 and includes 18 holes of golf, contests, a boxed lunch, an awards dinner, golf jacket and more. Proceeds benefit Marin Community Clinics.
