Graeme Bennett

The Club has learned of the sad news of the death, earlier this week, of Graeme Bennett.  Graeme was one of Hillhead’s players in the late 60s and 70s and is recognised, in effect, as the founder of our Club when it emerged from what had been the ‘Andersonians’.  By all accounts, he was a great enthusiast in helping Hillhead become established, grow and thrive.

It is unlikely that we’d be where we are today had it not been for Graeme’s efforts all these years ago.  He is pictured back row, far left, at Garscadden in the earliest known photo of a Hillhead team.

Early Hillhead

“A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit” (Ancient Greek Proverb)

Living in his retirement in Jersey, he kept up his interest in Hillhead and was delighted to learn of our success, keeping in touch with our progress through the website.  A few years ago, he wrote to the Club; amongst other facets of the modern Hillhead, he was impressed by our having “a licensed clubhouse, sponsorship, a dedicated management team and promising youngsters backed up any experienced old-timers”.

One of his sons had got tickets for the forthcoming hockey at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane - what a shame that he won’t be able to see Scotland … and a Hillhead player … in action!

This photo was taken during his last visit to Glasgow in summer 2016 to celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary when he was able to meet up with some former Hillhead players.

Graeme is survived by his wife and sons.
