During this episode you may be surprised to hear that Tim typically doesn’t ride his new showjumping partners before buying them, although he doesn’t necessarily recommend others follows his lead…
“I’m not saying it works for everyone, and it doesn’t work every time, but I have a little system in my mind now how I buy horses and I’m very strict on the way I do it. Sometimes when you go and try them, when you get them home they are a complete different horse. I feel with all the information that’s at hand now… sometimes not trying them and getting them in your yard is just the best way to do it” – Tim Gredley on how he buys elite showjumpers
Tim also talks to H&H’s showjumping editor Jennifer Donald about his sensitive 2023 European Championships ride Medoc De Toxandria’s unusual way of going and how he gets the best out of him.
Other discussions include Tim’s return to elite sport while running the family business full-time, his interests in racing and his short-lived point-to-pointing career, why it was nice to return to showjumping with a “clean slate”, and the difficulties of breaking into the top echelons of showjumping.
Tim also shares his thoughts on what he feels needs to change in Britain to keep our best riders competing here and ways to help the next generation of riders break through, as well as his personal ambitions for the future.
