Flexible Learning Programme Class of 2026
Whilst our flagship programme, The Foundation Course, is a primary focus at BRS, we also provide numerous other opportunities for young people to get involved in racing.
The Flexible Learning Programme (FLP) gives young people a stepping stone into the world of horse racing. This two year course is offered to 14-16 year olds on a day’s release from school each week during term time, as well as those that are home-schooled. The course leads to a Level 1 Diploma in Racehorse Care and involves direct work with horse and ponies, riding opportunities and classroom-based learning.
Students attend The British Racing School once a week during term time in years 10 and 11 when they will ride, take part in fitness sessions and attend classroom-based or practical theory sessions, to improve their riding and equine and racing-related knowledge. At the end of the course and having achieved their level 1 diploma, students have the opportunity to start a Level 2 Apprenticeship in a racing yard where they will get on-the-job experience and be a paid member of the team.
The FLP has supported many students throughout struggles with education, with several students subsequently managing to reengage with their mainstream provider. Schools have reported increased attendence levels and focus as a direct result of the programme.
