Charles Owen introduces new ‘lightweight’ body protector for junior riders

Equestrian safety specialist Charles Owen has added a new children’s body protector to its range, the EQx Hexa. It is the first product launch from the company since it announced it was closing its UK manufacturing facility.

The EQx Hexa body protector is designed for young riders to wear out hacking, during riding lessons, and while competing at shows. It is lightweight and certified to the highest BETA level 3 2018 body protector standard.

The body protector features a distinctive hexagonal foam structure similar to that used by other brands. The design distributes impact energy evenly across the honeycomb shape to provide better shock absorption with minimal bulk. This shape also allows it to flex in multiple directions and move with the rider for consistent comfort and coverage, without compromising performance.

The fit can be adjusted over the shoulders and at the sides using the hook and loop straps, while it is fastened with a central zip at the front, making it quick and easy to take on and off.

The Hexa is available in children’s sizes XS–XL, with short, regular, and long back options to help every rider find their perfect fit. The recommended retail price is £150.

Does my child need a body protector for horse riding?

A body protector offers an important extra layer of protection, absorbing impact from falls, kicks, or being stepped on. They are suitable for all riders, from someone learning to ride to the elite professionals. They are mandatory for eventing, required for Pony Club cross-country/pony racing, and for some showing classes.

Modern designs are increasingly lightweight and flexible. For children, choose adjustable, flexible designs for better fit and comfort. H&H recommends always having a body protector professionally fitted at a BETA-trained retailer as sizing is complex.
