MNHBPA Horse Person of the Week: Ray Hashimoto

Each week the Minnesota Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Agency recognizes a person that exemplifies the Minnesota horse racing industry. This week’s honoree is Ray Hashimoto.

Ray was introduced to racing in California by his father, a horse player. In the late 1970s, while visiting Golden Gate Fields in Northern California, Ray met jockey Roy Yaka, who mentored him. Aspiring to be a jockey but limited by weight restrictions, Ray became an exercise rider and groomed for Richard Levitt, quickly moving up in the industry.

He has worked with many Hall of Fame trainers throughout his career. He also traveled to Japan with Honor the Hero and trainer Doug Oliver for the Grade 1 Sprinters Stakes. Ray has been at Canterbury Downs and Park since 1985, serving in roles including exercise rider, pony person, horse owner, gate crew member, grounds crew, state worker, and jogging wheel operator. Ray is recognized for his strong work ethic and dependable dedication to those in the racing industry.

Ray will be recognized in a winner’s circle ceremony following Wednesday’s first race.

Thank you to the Minnesota HBPA and to sponsors Bravis Craft Mexican Kitchen located in Canterbury Commons and Luro Boots in Bloomington.
