Minnesota HBPA Horse Person of the Week: Victor Morales
Each week the Minnesota HBPA honors a person that exemplifies the Minnesota horse racing industry.
Following race one on Wednesday, Victor Morales will be recognized as the Minnesota HBPA Horse Person of the Week.
Victor, who has worked for trainer Tony Rengstorf for ten years, is a dedicated and passionate employee on the Canterbury backstretch. He started as a groom and has worked his way up to assistant trainer through hard work and consistency.
Victor’s commitment is evident in his daily routine, arriving early and often being the last to leave. He brings a sense of calm and order amid the early morning bustle of the barn, always ready to lend a hand or offer advice and help to his staff. He ensures the horses receive the best care possible. Victor’s quiet dedication and steady presence make him an essential part of the team, trusted by both humans and horses alike.
Colleagues and friends often remark on his unwavering commitment and infectious enthusiasm at the stables. His colleagues recall moments when, faced with unexpected challenges, a difficult horse or a sudden change in schedule, Victor responded with resourcefulness and calm.
Victor is also involved in supporting racing, as the owner of Beggin For Trouble, entered to run in the Minnesota Derby on Saturday.
Looking to the future, Victor hopes to inspire the next generation of horse people, just as he was inspired by his own parents and mentor Tony Rengstorf. He encourages anyone to pursue their aspirations in the racing world, emphasizing the value of patience, hard work, and genuine care for the animals.
For Victor, every day at the barn is more than just a job—it’s a continuation of a family legacy and a testament to his passion for the sport. One of his fond memories is working with Minnesota bred Drop of Golden Sun from breaking as a baby, to watching him outrun Mr. Jagermeister in the Crocrock Minnesota Sprint Championship, to his retirement.
Congratulations Victor.
Thank you to sponsors Luro Boots located in Bloomington and Bravis Craft Mexican Kitchen, located just across the street from Canterbury Park.
