Longshots and Favorites on Saturday at Canterbury Park; Three Carryovers Sunday

Drama Chorus wins Brooks Fields at 21-1; odds-on favorites win Canterbury Derby and Lady Canterbury.

Longshots dominated in the first six races Saturday at Canterbury Park with winners paying $66.20, $19.60, $19.60, $44.40, $14.00 and $13.80. The long prices led to carryovers in two pick 4s and the pick 5. The nine-race card included three $50,000 one-mile turf stakes that were rescheduled from last Saturday when extreme heat forced a cancellation of the racing program

Drama Chorus

Drama Chorus raced gate to wire at 21 to 1 in the $50,000 Brooks Fields Mile holding off Fearless Soldier to win by a nose. As the longest odds in the six-horse field, the 8-year-old bred in Florida by owner Pete Mattson paid $44.40. Alonzo Quinonez rode the winner for trainer Tim Padilla.

“Today he was sharp and he just broke out of there like a shotgun and the rest is history,” Quinonez said. Tonka Warrior finished third and favorite Kennebec was fourth.

The seventh and eighth races were won by Minnesota-bred odds-on favorites. Sushi Man, at 1 to 2 odds, raced on the lead throughout the $50,000 Canterbury Derby under top jockey Harry Hernandez, drawing off to win by 9 1/4 lengths. Homie chased and held second with Innately Good passing horses late to finish third. Sushi Man (pictured at top) is trained by Coty Rosin and owned and bred by One Bid Stable. He paid $3.00 to win.

Cupids Crush

The $50,000 Lady Canterbury was won by Cupids Crush who is undefeated in five starts on the Canterbury turf course. Hernandez was aboard the winner who paid $2.40. Cupids Crush is owned by Xtreme Racing Stables, LLC and is trained by Mac Robertson. She paid $2.40. Thunders Rocknroll, winner of the 2024 Lady Canterbury, set the fractions until Cupids Crush took command at the top of the stretch going on to win by two lengths. Thunders Rocknroll held second with Queen Judith running Third.

The final race was won by Little Trouble and jockey Eduardo Gallardo at 5 to 2 odds with yet another favorite missing the board. Robertson was the trainer. Total handle for nine races was $1,735,373.

Racing Sunday begins at 1:10 p.m. Race 1 starts the first pick 4 with a carryover of $8,226. The pick 5, with an industry low 10 percent takeout, begins in the second race with a carryover of $28,842. The second pick 4 begins in race 4 with a carryover pool of $9,050.
