Street Warrior dominates $75,000 Minnesota Derby

0 1

Upset in the Oaks as Retired Kathy wins at 12-1 odds.

Street Warrior left no doubt that he is the fastest Minnesota-bred 3-year-old when he raced gate to wire in the $75,000 Minnesota Derby at Canterbury Park. The chestnut gelding was sent directly to the front of the six-horse field by jockey Eduardo Gallardo. The duo drew off unchallenged to win by 7 3/4 lengths in 1:44.97 for a mile 70 yards, the furthest Street Warrior has raced in his three-race career.

Street Warrior is owned and was bred by Suzanne Hanifl’s Suzanne Stables. He is trained by Joel Berndt who also was the trainer of third-place finisher Victorious Vanda and fifth-place Frosty View. Superstar Swank finished second for trainer Mac Robertson. Street Warrior, pictured above, paid $2.40. He is now three for three and has earned $88,800 in purses.

Retired Kathy

Retired Kathy sprung an upset in the $75,000 Minnesota Oaks beating 1 to 9 favorite Xtreme Diva by three lengths. Jockey Chad Lindsay and Retired Kathy chased the pace in last up the backstretch of the one mile 70 yard race but steadily advanced to engage the favorite at the top of the stretch. A duel ensued with Retired Kathy prevailing as the clear winner. The 3-year-old filly is owned and was bred by Peter Mattson. She is trained by David Van Winkle who recorded his first Minnesota Oaks win.

Retired Kathy had prior experience in a route race while Xtreme Diva, trained by Robertson, had raced no further than three-quarters of a mile. “I was wondering if that route experience would kick in,” Van Winkle said. “It did.”

Retired Kathy paid $26.20 to win. Xtreme Diva held second, eight lengths clear of Northern Angel who finished third.

Jockey Fausto Da Silva won four races on the night:  Race 1 – Last Martini ($40.20), Race 4 – Coastal Waters ($8.80), Race 6 – Found Jordan ($4.40), Race 7 – Hurts So Good ($4.20).

Handle for the eight race card was $1,361,783.58.
