Jess Rocket Man favored in Cash Caravan Stakes

Olmstead seeks to win race seventh consecutive time

Jess Rocket Man, a 6-year-old thoroughbred gelding owned and bred in Minnesota by Bruce and Judy Lunderborg’s Lunderborg LLC, is the 2 to 5 morning line favorite to win Thursday’s $22,000 Cash Caravan Stakes at 440 yards. The stakes will be the eighth race on a nine-race program that begins at 5:12 p.m. CT.

The Lunderborg’s look to add to their Cash Caravan trophy collection as they have won this race five times before. Jess Rocket Man won in 2022. Dickey Bob won the Cash Caravan in 2018, 2020 and 2021 while Pyc Jess Bite Mydust won in 2019. Both are full brothers to Jess Rocket Man, by Apollitical Jess out of the mare Paint Or More. All three share Jason Olmstead as trainer.

Olmstead

Olmstead is amazed at the resiliency of the siblings. “They all stayed sound,” he said. Dickey Bob, now a 9-year-old, is still racing competitively and has earned $480,700 in a 62-race career.

Ramiro Garcia will have the mount on Jess Rocket Man and will break from post position four in the five-horse field.  Olmstead also won the Cash Caravan last year making it six consecutive victories. Jess Rocket Man easily won the Bob Morehouse Memorial July 10 at Canterbury at 1 to 9 odds beating three others entered in Thursday’s stake. Relentless Babe finished second in the Morehouse and Relentless Flash third. Both are trained by Olmstead. L Gallito, trained by Haley Hobbs, was fourth. Also entered Thursday is Western Reserve, trained by William Harris.

Jess Rocket Man is a multiple graded stakes winner that has won 13 times from 27 starts and amassed $227,883 in earnings. He has three wins from four starts at 440 yards and is the only horse in the field with success at that distance.

“Rocket Man in his day was a true 440 horse that I could take anywhere in the country,” Olmstead said.

Thursday’s card begins with five thoroughbred races and concludes with four quarter horse dashes.
