Billy Loughnane hoping to be a World star as he targets £50,000 charity windfall

BILLY LOUGHNANE is hoping to be on top of the World as he races to a £50,000 charity windfall.

Loughnane, 18, leads the way in the World Pool Jockeys’ Championship and will be hoping nearest rival Oisin Murphy doesn’t win today’s King George on Middle Earth.

Billy The Kid is clear at the top on 149.55 points thanks to his two big Royal Ascot winners Rashabar and Soprano.

He is 77.3 points clear of Murphy in the series which is based on the win dividends of their individual winners on World Pool days.

Rashabar returned at 80-1 at SP in the Coventry Stakes yet paid nearly 130-1 on the Tote’s World Pool.

Soprano was a 14-1 winner of the Sandringham yet returned a near- 20-1 for World Pool punters.

Those two massive payouts have put Loughnane in pole position to bag the cash for charity when the initiative ends  on Champions Day at Ascot on October 19.

Loughnane said: “It’s a great idea from World Pool to put up this cash to be won for charity. I’, very happy to be at the top and I hope I can keep it going for the rest of the World Pool days in Britain and Ireland.

“If I win, I will donate the cash to the Christy Lambe Foundation which raises money to help people struggling with mental health and poverty. It’s a charity close to my heart as Christy’s dad Michael is my sponsor, through his company Lambe Construction.

“The charity has only been going two years and £50,000 would be a big deal for them.”

BRITISH/IRISH WORLD POOL JOCKEYS CHAMPIONSHIP: B Loughnane (2 wins: 149.55pts); O Murphy (7 wins: 72.25pts); C Shepherd (2 wins: 57.10pts)
