But spectators may also notice several grey horses running in the big race at Aintree this year.

Though they’re rarer than other colours, grey horses are starting to appear more frequently at racecourses up and down the country.

Just three horses have ever won the Grand National since the very first race way back in 1839.

Brown, black, bay and chestnut are the most common colours of racehorse.

But there may well be a grey winner this year.

What grey horses are running in the Grand National?

This year there are FOUR grey horses in the running to win the Grand National.

  • Vanillier
  • Panda Boy
  • Coko Beach
  • Eldorado Allen

For the first time ever, just 34 horses will run the Grand National in an effort to better protect the welfare of the horses.

When was the last time a grey horse won the Grand National?

The last time a grey horse won the Grand National was in 2012 when Neptune Collonges won the big race.

Before that you would have to go back to 1961 when Nicolaus Silver picked up first prize.

And The Lamb won the National twice in the 19th century in 1868 and 1871.

  • The Lamb (1868, 1871)
  • Nicolaus Silver (1961)
  • Neptune Collonges (2012)
