Templegate says…

STARMAN can shine in the Duke Of York Stakes (2.40, nap).

He lived up to his name when scorching home to win a Listed contest over course and distance in September. It was too muddy in the Champions Sprint after that but the fact he ran in that Group 1 at all shows his class.

This surface will suit much better and he can strike again under champ Oisin Murphy.

Here’s my guide to all today’s ITV4 action.

1.40 YORK

ILARAAB was impressive when scoring over 1m2f here in October, getting the job done with lots left in the tank.

He should improve this season and has more to offer over this trip.

My Frankel beat Taqareer well on the AW at Kempton last time and they both have a fitness edge. They can fight it out for second with Labeebb also looking capable of better after a solid comeback at Wolverhampton.

2.10 YORK

GULLIVER can land his fifth win on the Knavesmire. He’s dropped below the mark that saw him win a similar contest in October and is fit from running on the sand.

This trip suits and it won’t matter if the ground is tacky. Woven caught the eye with a fast-finishing second at Thirsk and has more to offer for canny Michael Dods.

Bielsa came back from a long break to run well at Ayr last month and is best over this trip. Mr Lupton is another with a cracking record here who could hit the frame.

2.25 NEWTON ABBOTT

MON FRERE looked a nice prospect when winning easily at Taunton last month. He hasn’t been clobbered for this handicap debut and can improve.

Black Mischief is worth a market check on comeback. He has landed much stronger races but is entitled to need this run.

2.40 YORK

STARMAN clocked a big personal best when winning a Listed contest here in September before finding the ground too deep in Ascot’s Champions Sprint. He goes well fresh and has a lot more to offer with just four races under his belt.

Oxted is the obvious danger. He took the July Cup last season and looked in need of the run when an odds-on second at Newmarket last month. This trip is ideal and his best form would take him close. Art Power performed with credit at the highest level last season, signing off with a close fourth in the Champions Sprint. If he repeats that he’ll be right in the mix. Ayr Gold Cup winner Nahaarr is another with more to offer this year.

3.10 YORK

NOON STAR has improved with every run and was impressive when scoring at Wetherby on comeback last month. She is certain to improve for this longer trip and can boost her Oaks claims with another victory.

Teona clocked a fast time when winning at Newcastle in November without breaking sweat. We’ll see if she can back that up in this stronger company but she’s one to watch. Auria shaped well over a mile at Ascot 14 days ago and looks the type to improve for tackling this trip.

3.40 YORK

CAPTAIN COOPER did well last season and still looked green when fourth on comeback at Doncaster last time.

Dropping back in trip looks a wise move and he has more to come. Huddleton Mac signed off his juvenile season with a Sandown win and will find this a lot easier than the Greenham he ran in at Newbury last time. Rifleman unseated his rider when about to finish second on his handicap debut latest and comes from in-form Team Gosden with a chance. Northern Express when close at Beverley last time and is respected.
