Trainer Mick Winters ready to roll in mud again as he prepares to take on superstar Envoi Allen at Cheltenham Festival

0 21

IRISH trainer Mick Winters is hoping he’ll be rolling in the cash and not the mud at next month’s Cheltenham Festival.

His Chatham Street Lad hit the headlines with his win at Cheltenham in December.

Punters fell in love with Winters’ thick Irish accent
And he celebrated on style by rolling in the Cheltenham mud

After scooping the £60,000 first prize by a whopping 15 lengths, Winters didn’t fail on his promise to get down and dirty in the mud if his horse won.

Winters built up a fan club with his hilarious celebrations and post-race interviews on ITV.

And now with the same horse, County Cork-based Winters is eyeing up superstar Envoi Allen in the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Festival.

He said: “He’s not out of the Marsh. He’s still in that one. That’s the race the owners want to run in.

“He had a good break and we’ve taken him to the beach today to freshen him up.

“He’d had quite a bit of racing and he slightly disappointed the last day so we thought we’d freshen him up for Cheltenham.

“He cantered on the beach and in the water and he’s had some physio. He’s thriving.

“There were a lot of small things the last day. If we are going to run a good race the next day we are going to have to be 100 per cent.

“That’s what we’re aiming for and we think he has a good chance. We’d like to see plenty of rain in England.”

The Irish raider landed a big gamble when winning at Cheltenham last time.

And the bookies could be underestimating him again with odds as big as 20-1 available.

He has to take on the mighty Gordon Elliott-trained Envoi Allen though, who remains the red-hot 8-11 favourite.
