Victorian Veteran Confirmed for Canberra Friday

 

Victorian-trained Severn Road is a certain starter at Friday’s Canberra race meeting on the Acton synthetic surface.

The now 10 year old Severn Road is trained by Jamie Edwards at Emsley Lodge at Freshwater Creek, 15 minutes out of Geelong.  

Edwards said Severn Road is a “duffer” on the wet and enjoys synthetic surfaces.  

“He’s hit his mark in Victoria and is carrying a lot of weight — and is often competing against horses from leading city yards,” Edwards said.

“We thought Friday’s race looked a good option for him.

“Many years ago I was foreman to Keith Dryden and have a lot of friends and contacts in Canberra.

“I spoke to Keith, and he suggested we engage the 3kg claiming apprentice, Courtney Gravener.

“He’s an ideal 3kg apprentice horse. He likes to bowl along and that makes it easier.”

In fact, seven of Severn Road’s wins have been recorded with apprentices on board.

The veteran gelding is a Traralgon Cup winner and his last and 10^th win was recorded in late May on the Geelong Synthetic over 1900m, when he topped $200,000 in prizemoney.

“I really looking forward to the visit and seeing the Acton track and it will be good to catch up with old mates.”
